Låt nummer femton på listan är ännu en av alla låtar Bruce Springsteen skrivit men som blivit känd genom andra artister. Talk To Me, Hearts Of Stone, The Fever, Fire, Trapped Again, Light Of Day och kanske framför allt Because The Night som blev en jättehit 1978 med Patti Smith. När Bruce och The E Street Band befann sig i studion för att spela in Darkness On The Edge Of Town så var Patti Smith och hennes band i studion bredvid och spelade in sin platta Easter. Bruce kände att låten inte passade in på Darkness och gav den därför till Patti i stället. Hon skrev om texten något och inkluderade den på sin platta. Den nådde 13 plats på Billboard-listan och blev hennes största hit dittills. Här är texten till hennes version:

Bruce själv har aldrig släppt låten i studioversion officiellt. Däremot finns den med på en rad bootlegs, däribland The Definite Darkness Outtakes. Låten blev dock något av en inventarie i Springsteens liveshower och lika så en av höjdpunkterna. Jag har den på ett stort antal bootlegs och kan inte riktigt bestämma mig för vilken som är bäst. Versionen på Roxy Night kanske? Eller den på Passaic Night? Eller versionen från Johanneshov 1981 på Teardrops On The City? Eller versionen av låten som uppstått sedan Nils Lofgren kom med i bandet, med det långa gitarrsolot? Den som jag för första gången själv fick höra de båda kvällarna på Ullevi i somras och aldrig kommer att glömma. Because The Night börjar stillsamt med en fantastisk pianoslinga från Roy Bittan. Dock stegrar låten snart, för att fullständigt brisera i refrängen. Ullevis fantastiska publik lyfte låten till ännu högre höjder - allsången var häpnadsväckande. Och sedan kommer då Nils Lofgrens gitarrsolo som får alla hakor att ramla i golvet. Långt, glödande och passionerat. Nils snurrar runt som en ballerina, drar och bänder i strängarna och framlockar magiska toner. Because The Night var absolut en av sommarens höjdpunkter. Eller lyssna på gitarren i introt av låten från bootlegsen från 1978, 1.03 in i versionen från Passaic här nedan. Gåshudsframkallande. Eller Clarence Clemons saxofonsolo... Lyssna på intensiteten i låten, lyssna på attacken, på nerven. Fan, vad bra det är.
